
Free Food Handlers Class (ID & Basic Laptop Skills Required for Entry):

- Registration opens 30 min prior to class. We can welcome you inside the facility as early as 30 min prior to class. Please check in with us at the front desk and present your ID. Let the staff member know whether you want an Arizona or New Mexico Food Handlers certification (note: click here for Navajo Nation Food Handlers certification program, as the Arizona Food Handlers is for non-tribal areas in Arizona). Bring your cellphone so we can push the mobile-friendly class registration form to your device.
- Important: Doors open 30 min prior to class. We won’t be ready for you until then.
- Arrivals 15 min after scheduled start time will not take the test or receive card.
- Important: Arrive before class starts.
- Registration is first-come, first served.
- Important: We do not reserve seating or make appointments for class.
- The class fills up at 15 students.
- Important: After the first 15 students are registered (in person), we cannot admit additional students.
- The class duration is approximately 2 hours.
- Important: Those arranging transportation to/from our site can advise accordingly for drop off and pickup.
- Laptop is furnished during class.
- Important: Participants will need to be able to type basic text, point and click on the laptop to advance course content and the exam.
- We cannot admit children under 12 yrs of age.
- Important: Minors over 12 may take the classroom option with their accompanied parent or guardian.
- Wóshdę́ę́’: Navajo Language speakers are welcome to our English-Navajo class.
- Important: We’ll do our best to translate. If Navajo is the primary language spoken, please come!
- A laptop to use while attending class. (You must be able to perform basic keystrokes, pointing and clicking with the laptop furnished).
- A cheat sheet with reference material for the course and exam.
- One (1) printed certificate (large size for framing, etc.), printed by a professional color printer.
- One Certification is provided free of charge. You can utilize your created food handler’s account to purchase another certification. We do not provide two certifications in one classroom session or provide two certifications for one student.
- One (1) professional badge-quality food handers card (wallet size).
- A pencil or pen to write with.
- Scratch paper to take notes with.
- One (1) beverage (usually coffee or water).
- One (1) snack.
- Napkin / Beverage napkin.
- Kleenex
- Hand Sanitizer
- One (1) Narcan Kit provided in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Health Harm Reduction Program. Each kit contains two (2) 4mg doses.
- A heated and/or air-conditioned space.
- Access to a ADA-compliant restroom with running cold and hot water, paper towels, soap and hand sanitizer.
- The free class is led by one of our volunteer staff, who is a Certified Community Health Worker (NM and AZ) and Harm Reduction Specialist, who has been facilitating Food Handler classes with us since 2018.
- A security officer shall be present on site, from the time registration opens (30 min prior to class) and after class is dismissed.
- Additional information regarding Turquoise Care, NM Medicaid Enrollment, etc. may be provided in your class packet.
- There is a quiz at the end of class, which requires 70% or better to pass.
- There are 30 questions, multiple choice. Only one answer is valid for each multiple choice question.
- Students will have the option to mark their test questions for review. After completing all 30 questions, students may ask the volunteer instructor to review their marked answers; however, the instructor is required to ask why any incorrectly-marked answers are wrong, and why the right answers are correct.
- Those passing the test have the option to remain after class and have one (1) certificate printed in color and one (1) food handler card (professional badge quality).
- This class is provided free of charge. For items/services requested for more than what is provided above, our volunteer staff will go over options on how to acquire these independently.
- Show ID as it will be required to receive free services from us.
- You must have basic typing, pointing and clicking abilities to work on the laptop furnished during class to cover course material and take the exam on the laptop provided.
- One Certification is provided free of charge. Staff cannot change your certification (i.e., from New Mexico to Arizona) once signed in. You can utilize your created food handler’s account to purchase another certification. We do not provide two certifications in one classroom session or provide two certifications for one student.
- Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as YOU wish to be treated. Our advisory board has rightfully resolved to take the path of patience over sternness, meaning we all have our moments and bad days. Therefore, disrespectful behavior (trolling, continually interrupting the volunteer staff, general disrespect towards our volunteer staff, employees or other students, demanding items, disharmonizing the environment and/or interfering with others’ ability to learn) will all be granted only one verbal warning. After such, you will be asked to leave by the security officer, no matter where you are at in the process.
- If you’re more than 15 minutes late (that’s 15 minutes past the scheduled start time of the class), we cannot admit you. Check in with security for the flyer listing schedules for the next class, etc.
- Do not use your cellphone once inside as you will be in a healthcare setting.
- Do take those urgent calls outside, we will try to catch you up when you return.
- Place your phone on silent.
- There is no photography or recording permitted while on site.
- Do advise our volunteer staff of any unwanted behavior.
- If you have feedback for us, you’ll be asked to put it in writing and direct it to our Board. No exceptions. Gallup Health consists of an Advisory Board and a Board of Directors, who manage efforts to continually improve our operation. The Advisory Board shall accept written input, provided your name / contact information is included. The Advisory Board consists of seven (7) members, all anonymous, all volunteers and all genuinely interested in addressing the issues facing our community.
